PAIN AND THE BRAIN

Presented by Nick Rawlins, Professor of Experimental Psychology and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.

Do you suffer from headaches? Does back pain keep you up at night? Most of us experience recurring pain at some point in our lives, but how do we know that the pain is real and not just in our minds?

For our first Cafes Scientifique, Professor Rawlins explains that when it comes to chronic pain, the mind-body interaction holds the key to understanding why it hurts. The pain we feel stems not only from our current health problems, but also from our fear of future pain.

PAIN AND THE BRAIN recounts the extraordinary tale of a man who had a huge steel bar blown through his skull, but miraculously survived. Encompassing 'the most famous brain in neuroscience', amazing new technology which allows us to see right inside the brain, and a toe that had a nail driven through it (ouch!), this Cafe will help you see your aches and pains in a whole new light.

When: Monday 27th May 2013. 7pm doors open, grab a drink and a snack. 7.30-9.00pm talk followed by discussion.
Where: Hong Kong Maritime Museum, Central Ferry Pier No.8
Cost: FREE

Tuesday March 12
Dr Simon Taylor Lecture: What is the Future for Western Banks?
6pm at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Lee Quo Wai Room.
9 Justice Drive, Admiralty (right next to the British Consulate-General)

Unpopular, shrinking and increasingly regulated, Western banks are having a difficult time. The stock market values them at below their book value, implying they will do a poor job in future. Graduates increasingly regard them as embarrassing to work for. So what’s the future for these banks? Is this just a temporary phase before returning to steady growth and strong profitability? Or are they likely to be more like utilities in future – useful, slow growing and dull. How likely is it that we face another bank-driven financial crisis in future? Simon, himself a former employee of JP Morgan and Citigroup, will share some thoughts on the likely future for the major banks of the US and Europe.
