Founded in 1981 by Sir Dr David Li, The Friends of Cambridge University in Hong Kong (known as ‘The Friends’) has raised and managed a scholarship fund called The Prince Philip Scholarship and has been supporting numerous promising students from Hong Kong to study at Cambridge University since 1982. The Prince Philip Scholarship includes a non-means tested cash award and one Hong Kong-London economy class return air ticket will also be awarded free of means test results. Scholars may also claim, where necessary, the full costs of tuition and subsistence. In addition to the administration of the scholarship, The Friends also organise alumni social activities, mentorship program, secondary school program, charity, prominent alumni profile and more. Scholarship detailsUNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE NOTES The generosity of a number of Hong Kong citizens has allowed the establishment of the Scholarship to enable Hong Kong students to attend the University of Cambridge with, where necessary, full financial support. His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, being Chancellor of the University, has graciously allowed his name to be associated with the Scholarship. Value of the Scholarship The Scholarship includes a non-means tested cash award of GBP4,500 per annum. One Hong Kong-London-Hong Kong economy class return air ticket will also be awarded free of means test results. Where necessary, the Scholarship also provides financial assistance for the students to meet the costs of tuition and subsistence. Decisions about this extra claim are based on a means test. Tenure The Scholarship is reviewed annually in the light of academic progress and is normally extended for the duration of the undergraduate course of three or four years. Eligibility for a Scholarship To be eligible for a Scholarship, a student should either have been born in Hong Kong or have acquired “Hong Kong belonger” status through long residence. Students eligible for United Kingdom Home Fee Status will not be considered for a Prince Philip Scholarship.
